1-2 DECEMBER: BOA VISTA ULTRA TRAIL, CAPE VERDE
Boa Vista, the island closest to the African continent of the Cape Verde archipelago, with just over 12,000 inhabitants, is one of the last terrestrial paradises. This event is an opportunity to learn about the true nature of this beautiful land, among deserts, salt marshes, ocean, small villages and idyllic landscapes that can only be found here.
You can participate in one of three races:
the 150K Ultra Marathon traces the circumnavigation of the island,
the 70K Salt Marathon with the arrival located in one of the last saltworks of the island,
and the 42K Eco-Marathon that will bring athletes in a pristine nature between the ocean and the desert.
Three routes with a unique scenery, with miles to run on constantly changing grounds: dirt roads that become desert dunes, smolders that turn into streets, all in self-sufficiency.
The race traverses desert terrain and so climate and environmental conditions are extreme. During the day, temperatures get above 30 degrees but can fall as low as 10 degrees at night. So you will need to bring all the necessary kit to cope with this temperature difference in your backpack.
The Boa Vista Ultra Trail means competing with the wild nature of the island, and against yourself. An experience that leaves its mark.
Boa Vista is a qualifying race for the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) 2019.
By completing the 150K race you’ll earn 5 ITRA points and if you finish the 75K race you’ll get 2 ITRA points.

12-14 December 2018: ANTARCTIC ICE MARATHON & 100K, ANTARCTICA
On 13th December 2018 the thirteenth and fourteenth Antarctic Ice Marathon race will take place at 80 Degrees South, just a few hundred miles from the South Pole at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains. Infinite land of pristine snow and stark mountain vistas illuminated by 24 hours of constant sunlight.
The Antarctic Ice Marathon is the southernmost marathon on earth. A truly formidable and genuine Antarctic challenge with underfoot conditions comprising snow and ice throughout, an average windchill temperature of -20C, and the possibility of strong Katabatic winds to contend with, at an altitude of 700 meters. Don’t expect to run your quickest time, however, as winds can blow from the Pole at a steady 10-25 knots. Forget about penguins or crowds cheering you along the route. No penguins live this far south and you will have to rely on yourself to push onward in the hushed, indomitable surroundings.
If you associate the word ‘impossible’ with an irresistible challenge, the Antarctic Ice Marathon and Antarctic 100K are right up your street. The Frozen Continent Half-Marathon (21.1K/13.1mi) will also be run on the same day.
The three-day 2018 itinerary will see competitors fly by private jet from Punta Arenas, Chile, on 12th December to the marathon location at Union Glacier, Antarctica. A marked course of 42.2km (26.2 miles) will have been prepared in advance and snowmobile support, aid stations and medical personnel will be at hand for the duration of the race. Competitors are scheduled to return to Punta Arenas on 14th December.
You’ll receive accommodation and food for the entire Antarctic trip. Full registration fee: €15,000.
You can join the exclusive 7 Continents Marathon Club by combining this race with marathons on each of the other six continents.

December 2018: Hellgate 100K, Fincastle, Virginia, USA
If you are looking for a real test of your endurance and mental toughness, Hellgate is ideal.
This grueling, grim, and hazardous night event in the cold is limited to 140 runners.
The course has lots of little ups and downs, but many uphills are runnable.
A variety of single-track roads and gravel roads, covered with leaves, mud, snow or ice, depending on the weather, make it extra challenging.
The weather at this time of the year in Virginia is very “unpredictable”. It could be 30-40 at night and 50-60 in the daytime or 20-30 at night and 30-40 in the day. We don’t usually have much snow at this time of the year, but we could. Come prepared for EVERYTHING. In 2003 we had a foot of snow in the early part of the course with temperatures in the teens!! In 2005 we had a couple of inches of ice on 4- 8” of snow. We had VERY cold temperatures in 2006 (11°). Beware of frozen eyeballs. If it is cold wear some type of glasses or goggles. In 2016 it got down to 8°.
The time cut-offs for Hellgate are tight, and they don’t change due to weather.
To qualify, you need to list which events you have completed in the last year.
If the Race Committee “thinks” you can finish the Hellgate 100K you’ll be accepted for entry. The RC DOES NOT want runners competing that don’t have a realistic shot of completing Hellgate within the time limit of 18 hours.
Hellgate is a qualifying race for the Western States Endurance Run (WSER).
